
Cycling track
Cycling track at Panevėžys CIDO arena was designed and equipped by SportBau, company based in Germany. Since 1925, the company has equipped 121 tracks around the world. Project of Panevėžys track was designed by architect Ralph Schuermann, manager of the company. He has lately also designed Beijing olympic track for 2008 Olympics.
CIDO arena featuring 1 category, 250 metre-long olympic standard cycling track is a unique sports complex in the region, the only one of its kind in the Baltic states.
DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS ON THE RACE TRACK
SPRINT RACE (OLYMPIC EVENT)
In qualification, cyclists start after run-up, and compete in individual race for time in 200-metre distance.
For semi-final and final heats, cyclists are grouped in pairs based on the result achieved, with fastest fighting with slowest, in 3 laps (250-metre long track). Winner is cyclist who beats his competitor twice.
Winner of event is cyclist winning all fights.
HEAT
1,000-metre distance (men), 500-metre (women). This is individual race for time, starting from standing position. Start involves automatic cyclist release machine.
Winner of event is cyclist finishing first.
KEIRIN
Cyclists start following leader on motorbike in lead; the leader accelerates, with women, to 45 km/hour, and with men, to 50 km/hour; with 700 metres to the finish, the leader retires, and cyclists compete in the remaining distance.
Winner of event is cyclist finishing first.
PURSUIT RACE (OLYMPIC EVENT)
The race is individual for time. Women, depending on the age, cover 2,000 or 3,000 metres, and men 3,000 or 4,000 metres. In qualification, on cast of dice, cyclists are grouped in fight pairs. Cyclists start form standing position, in different track sides. In final races, cyclists are grouped in pairs depending on the qualification result, with fastest against the slowest. Winner of event is cyclist winning pair fight.
TEAM PURSUIT RACE (MEN OLYMPIC EVENT)
Team includes 3 women or 4 men. The race is for time from standing position. The competition follows the rules of individual pursuit race. Winner is team that wins all duels in the final.
TEAM SPRINT (MEN OLYMPIC EVENT)
Team race from standing position for time. Men go in groups of three for three laps, and women in groups of two for two laps. After the end of each lap, leasing cyclist retires from the race. Winner is team fastest in the distance.
TEAM RACE ON POINTS (OLYMPIC EVENT)
A group of cyclists start simultaneously, with interim finish every few laps. Cyclist, coming first, second, third, and fourth respectfully, gets 5, 3, 2, and 1 point. Cyclist who overtakes the group gets 20 points. Winner is cyclist with most points.
SCRATCH
The race is part of track group race event and takes place as group race. 10 to 24 cyclists compete in set number of laps (depending on age group). Winner of the event is cyclist, fastest in the distance and finishes first.
GROUP ELIMINATION RACE
Group elimination race is a race of 10 to 24 cyclist competing. Every 2 laps include interim finish. At every interim finish, cyclist finishing last is eliminated. At the pinnacle of the race, when only three strongest cyclists remain, there are is interim finish, and fight for the first place begins. Winner of the event is cyclist, who finishes first.
